Allison in Singapore

Allison is a friend from high school. She's living in Singapore right now where she works in early childhood education. Here's her take on how things are currently going.

"Most things are running as normal, but we all kind of have this feeling of impending doom. As Singapore is an island without its own food production, and almost all of our goods are imported, the government has stated that at a normal consumption rate, we have about 3 months of everything left. It’s possible they may start to impose rationing and even martial law - but this is in case of emergency. Basically, they are just telling people to only buy and consume what they need so that there is enough for everyone since borders are now pretty much shut down worldwide.
My work visa hasn’t come in yet, but schools are still open here and the government is doing studies to determine whether it is actually worthwhile to shut schools, as they don’t seem to be a source of spreading/outbreak at this time. Hopefully they stay open at least Long enough for me to have my contract signed so that I can have some income finally. This is important because my boyfriend's airline has cancelled all flights until further notice, which means he is on no-pay leave until whenever. This is obviously causing us a pretty significant amount of stress since at the moment we have no income whatsoever, and if my new job doesn’t pull through for whatever reason, we are screwed. While Singapore isn’t in a state of emergency, we definitely feel the social responsibility to stay home as much as possible. Not everyone feels that way, but at least most people who go out wear masks. The government has done really well at lowering the curve here, so mostly the biggest worry is running out of food and supplies on the entire island."
